Dear Friend,

I am seeking the Republican nomination for District Attorney of Fort Bend County in the March, 2002 primary. I was born and raised in Fort Bend County which is and hopefully will always be my home. I would like to see Fort Bend County continue to be a great place to live and raise a family. However, I have become concerned about the future of the county due to problems that I perceive in the District Attorney's office which are costing the taxpayers money and allowing criminals to avoid just punishment.

Some of the problems that I see are: 1) clogged intake system; 2) inefficient and inconsistent discovery procedures; 3) multiple unnecessary resets; and most importantly 4) prosecution errors in the trial of cases that result in justice not having been served.

If elected, I will work to resolve these problems by instituting a 24 hr./7 day-a-week intake system. Discovery will be streamlined, more consistent and assistant D.A.s will not be allowed to have outside employment so that their full attention will be on handling the cases to which they are assigned. A realistic evaluation of each case will be made early for the defendant to consider, and if the recommendation is not accepted by the defendant, the case will be submitted for trial at a time when it can be expected to be reached. This will eliminate unnecessary resets that cause victims and witnesses to take off from work numerous times to attend settings when the case does not go to trial. There will be more oversight and mentoring of the assistant D.A.s who will be trained in the use of trial notebooks and standardized procedures for use during trial.

I am asking for your support in my effort to make Fort Bend County a better place to live.

Very truly yours,
Clifford J. Vacek
